Fred Batton, the Parish Council Chairman, gave the signal for the Scouts to turn on each of the Christmas Street lights (- aided by a 'responsible adult to manage the electrics'). There were a couple of people in fancy dress - the most notable was the 'Tin Soldier' who looked wonderful in her red cap, jacket and with large red cheeks!
A large cheer rang out as the lights came on one by one down the High Street as the Scouts took their signal in turn along the line of street lamps.
After a few more carols, accompanied by a man playing his accordion, mince pies were given out to all and then the Parish Council Chairman led the crowd across the High Street with his lantern, to The Lord Louis Pub and the offices of Property File where they we all given mulled wine and more mince pies.
The festivities continued at the Lord Louis Pub with Father Christmas, sitting next to the roaring log fire, ready to talk to the children about Christmas and further along the High Street the singing continued in the Property File office as the mulled wine and mince pies kept people in the spirit.
A lovely quote of the evening came from one little boy about 4 years old asking a Scout and his adult helper "Will you be coming to turn the lights off again?" We weren't sure if he meant the next morning, or after 12th Night, in January! |
