The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have been really busy and having lots of fun – from a very busy and active Half Term holiday – they’ve been getting very muddy, helping and being involved in our Community, working towards ‘Badges and Awards, taking part in Competitions and even doing a little Entertaining - and being Entertained ...

Relaxing at Half Term

You may have thought that Half Term should a holiday but not for our Scout Group. The Panther Pack Cubs had their annual Cub Night Hike from Hunsdon to Stanstead Abbotts – with Hot food and drinks served by the Scouts and Leaders along the way – Click here for the full story.

The Forest Beaver Colony celebrated Bonfire Night with a huge party for all the Beavers and their families. Bonfire, Burgers, singing, sparklers and a competition for the best Guy made this year’s 5th Nov a night to remember for over 100 people down at HQ.  The Scouts and Jaguar Cub Pack made Guys too.  The Jaguar Pack's Guys ended up on the St Margaretsbury Firework display after winning 1st and 2nd places - click here for more of the story!

An Unforgettable Remembrance Weekend

Always a major and important date in the Scout diary, the difference sections attended a wide variety of events to mark the day, culminating with the parade and church service at St Andrew's and 2 minute silence on the Sunday.

The Jaguar Cubs were visited by the Chairman of Ware British Foreign Legion (more on this...) and the Scouts visited the Imperial War Museum, the two Cenotaphs on Whitehall and placed a cross in the Garden of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey (for the full story and pictures) , whilst the Panther Cubs enjoyed a wartime 1940’s themed Remembrance Weekend Indoor Camp and early Christmas Party at Well End Farm.

Our perfectly turned out Beavers , Cubs and Scouts joined the Guides and Youth Club at the St Andrews’s Church service and were thanked and praised for their good behaviour by many attending the service led by the Vicar. Our flag bearers and wreath layers performed their duties with pride and dignity. See Gallery for Photos

Out and about in our Community

All the age groups are frequently learning about our local community – getting involved where they can and helping when ever possible.  Often their projects are with badges and awards in mind and other times just because its fun and interesting., After a call from the Playground Committee the Scouts spent a Saturday morning shifting soil and re-seeding parts of the Village Playground as part of their Community Challenge Badge and the continuing development of the new playground facilities. go to  Scouts at work with the Playground Committee for more on this and check out the photos in the Gallery.

The Woodland ‘Willowthorpe’ Beaver Carol Singers are set to entertain the residents in the run up to Christmas.  This annual event is hugely appreciated by the residents and staff at the Willowthorpe Nursing Home and the children enjoy singing some of their favourite carols before being given refreshments before they leave.

A coach trip to see the annual Panto left St Margaret's Station on the Friday 10th Dec - one of our ex-Scouts, now Explorer Scout was in the show and we look forward to getting a review of the show for the next edition!

Finally, after Snakey Sue's visit to the Panther Cubs recently, with a host of snakes there may be some interesting pets on the Christmas Wish Lists this year!

Awards and Badges

There has been a huge amount of work done by many children this term as they work towards a variety of Scout Badges and Awards.  With arms and shirts filling up, a huge well done goes to all the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who have been working really hard to achieve all the requirements for each one – and thanks to the parents and friends who have helped them get them too! Watch out for the interesting and impressive array of badges they’ve achieved – from Emergency Aid, Collectors, Air Activities, Water Sports, Chef to The Promise, Outdoor and Community Challenges which can take a number of weeks or months complete.  We even an Equestrian Badge awarded this term to one of our Cubs.  No surprise then, at the fantastic number of Bronze and Silver Chief Scout Awards being achieved this term.  We hear that several Scouts are now near to completing their Gold Chief Scout Awards!

The Woodland Colony Beavers enjoyed a badge and awards presentation evening at the fire pit at HQ with friends and parents cheering them on before everyone enjoyed some refreshments!.

Mud Glorious Mud!

The mud has been great and there’s been lots of it - but even with the cold and fog the everyone has been out and about – ready for anything – from November camping competitions for the Scouts at the Annual County Green Beret competition near Hemel  - The Annual Panther Cub Night Hike around the local fields and the Beavers out with their torches around the village.  Many of your Cubs and Scouts love the challenges of going off on an adventure with a group of their friends in the cold, wet, muddy fields and woods of Hertfordshire and had done their first Nights Away as young Beavers with their hand held torches on indoor sleepovers.

With the various Competitions this term, the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have put into practice some of the new skills they have learned and improved on existing ones - like night navigation on the Nocturnal Competition, or Teamwork on Heavyweight or Campcraft at the Oxley Shield, plus much, much more!   And with the fun and friendships they make both within their teams and with other Scout Groups they meet up with, places on the teams are always popular.

Coming up

The Leaders have been busy planning for the Spring Term which should see lots more fun and adventure at the Scouts HQ as well as the possibility of a few trips and events to attend for the various sections: The March March on Dartmoor, A Night at the Museum, the Snowdome, Swimming Galas, Mass Easter Egg Hunts plus of course the St George's Day weekend - how will we be celebrating this year? Camps and parades?  Look out for letters, emails and checkout the website.

Happy Christmas and a huge thank you to all.

Thanks to all the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and also to all the guys who make it happen - the Leaders and their Teams, The Exec Team and all the behind the scenes guys, the Young Leaders and Explorer Scouts who all help make this and lots more happen!
