The highlight for 1st Stanstead Abbotts Panther Cub Pack this month was their indoor camp at Well End in Borehamwood.  This year they decided to combine Remembrance Sunday with their Christmas camp, and set the theme for the 1940s – it was going to be a Wartime Christmas Camp.

The Panther Pack Cubs were issued with Identity Cards and Ration Books and  had a great time taking part in activities including making lanterns, Christmas trees, and poppies.  They also had quizzes about wartime and what the people did then and even played 1940 themed games.

On the Saturday they had’ Christmas Dinner’ with a visit from Father Christmas, but even  his grotto was set up in an air raid shelter and during the whole visit, you could hear air raid sirens, planes and bombings going on overhead – the Cubs said it sounded very real. In the evening, they had a fancy dress party to celebrate the New Year. They came dressed in the outfits they had put together at home and had great fun dressed up as evacuees, soldiers, air raid wardens etc. All in all, the Cubs learned a lot about life during the war in the 1940’s and gained a greater understanding of the meaning of Remembrance Day.

After packing up on the Sunday morning, the Cubs, Leaders and Young Leaders observed the two minutes silence at 11 o’clock. They said prayers and gave thanks, before being collected and taken home by their parents, happy, excited, tired and with another memorable weekend behind them, ready for a well earned sleep!
