There was no Ginger Beer for seven intrepid Scouts who took the challenge of the annual 'March March' across Dartmoor last weekend.
Driving down on the Friday after school the Scouts slept overnight in the local village hall.
Early the next morning, they joined 53 scouts and 15 volunteer leaders from South Brent before setting off on hikes of 11-15km carrying all their own kit. After a good days walking in mixed teams of six Scouts, a 'wild' camp was established at Scad Brook – an idyllic brook on the Southside of the Moor. The Scouts cooked their own food on meths stoves and after a night's rest under canvas hiked back in to the village for a hearty, well deserved roast dinner.
By walking, cooking and sleeping in tents in their teams, many of our Scouts made new friends from other Scout Groups within their team. With different ability groups walking differing routes all the Scouts were challenged whether it was their first or second March March.
Although chilly at times, the sun was out as some of the teams were pictured having enormous fun 'jumping' into the strong wind. The weekend is a huge favourite of many of the Scouts and find the challenge and adventure of what can be a demanding weekend just what they love. Please view the photos in the Gallery.
Huge thanks must go to the Leader team for driving them there and back and arranging and leading all the various aspects. The only one disappointment heard, was that they had to leave before 'The Cheese' part of their four-course sit down Sunday Roast in order to get home in time to bath and sleep before school on Monday morning! |
