After an intensive course on the theory and practice of gliding, each Scout and Leader was taken up in turns for a 20 min flight with an instructor, in the special Scout owned glider.  Everyone completed handouts to help them learn the parts of the planes and the theory and physics of lift and flight.

With beautiful blue skies, everyone had the most amazing two days and nights.  With temperatures falling to around -4 on the Friday night, the Scouts kept warm exploring the aerodrome by way of a treasure hunt wide game to find out more about the ex-WW2 air field they were camping on, before enjoying a camp fire and snuggling up in their tents.

Split into two groups of 10 - one group glided on the Saturday and the other on the Sunday.  The group not gliding were treated to a very educational day in the woods learning much about the woods around them and even the differing soil underfoot (the soil type changes abruptly from one to another having a dramatic influence on what is growing around - ask one of the Scouts or Leaders for more on-the-spot descriptions!)  Many thanks went to the to the volunteer warden at Waresly & Gransden Woods who gave the kids the guided tour, talked about woodland management & conservation. The Scouts were also taught how to make a Hazel fence around the badger set & cleared felled trees!

The Scouts completed three badges in the course of the weekend:

  • The Aeronautical Badge
  • The Aviation Skills Badge
  • The Forester Badge

Many of the Scouts - and Leaders - came home brimming with the new things they had learned and the amazing experiences they had had during the weekend.
