he "Woodland Beavers" met up at "Stansteadbury Farm" on a warm, sunny, early evening.Over the field to see the flock of Hens and Cockerel that live there to feed them, check water and to collect the Brown eggs from the nest Box - then, armed with a bucket full of duck-weed, taken from the near by Pond, they went to meet and feed the four young Indian runner Ducks that have recently come to live at the Farm, but who are still too young to take to the water. Their feathers need to moult from Chick down to Adult plumage before they can safely be let onto the large pond - to do so now may mean that this down does not protect the Ducklings against the wet and cold of the water, and they could perish. They have a tray of water in their enclosure to "paddle in" for now!
Then back to the Barn, and climbed aboard a seated trailer with plastic windows, pulled by a kind Farm worker driving his tractor. The Beavers were thrilled to see real live Hares in the Rape fields! Much more active than one of their leaders who is also called "Hare", who was sitting in the trailer with them!
The ride ended up in the field where the herd of young Black cows were grazing - so full-up apparently they did not want to eat the "Cow cake" that Badger offered them!Returning to the Barn, the Beavers eat a lovely mixture of "Health Foods" - including tomato / cucumber / sweet peppers / strawberry's / apples etc. provided by the parents - and a drink of fruit juice.
This was to be the last meeting for one of the older Beavers, Louie who was presented with a certificate to remember his time with the "Woodland Colony", where he had achieved the highest award possible for a Beaver - The Bronze award.
A group photograph was taken before the Beavers said goodnight to each other, and returned home with their parents who had arrived to transport them back. |
