"An Island Adventure"
25 members of the 1st Stanstead Abbotts Scout Troop set off the beginning of August for their annual week long summer camp, which this year took place on the Isle of Wight
14 Scouts and 11 Leaders travelled by minibus and cars to Portsmouth and then by ferry to the island.
The Scouts all completed a number of activity badges; Entertainer, Camper and Camp Cook. Designing and cooking a three course meal on an open fire. The camp allowed many of the Scouts to complete their Outdoor Challenge Awards with Tony, Leigh and Leam also completing their Outdoor Plus Awards– finishing the requirements for the Chief Scout's Gold Award.
The senior Scouts completed their Navigator Badge by leading the other Scouts and Leaders on a number of hikes, including one at night. This was followed by a night under the stars sleeping around the camp fire.
Jessika Palmer was also presented with her 100 nights away award by the Island's District Commissioner. Fitting, as Ware and District Scouts celebrate their Centenary.
Whilst away they also had the opportunity to be tourists, visiting; Blackgang Chine, Steam Railway and Open Top Bus, Alum Bay including the chairlift to the beach where they went on a speedboat out to the Needles.
At the end of the week we enjoyed a Gala BBQ afterwhich there was an awards ceremony. Each Scout received an award for the positive contribution they had made to the camp. There were also rewards for the Best Tent, Most Improved Tent and Best Patrol. The Scouts had received points all week towards these awards.
Family and friends were able to join in the fun following the activities at the camp on the regularly updated blog.
Thanks must be given to all the Leaders who made this camp such a great experience for the Scouts.
