Huge success for our Cubs at Oxley Shield & Wildgoose Competitions
Posted on 18 September 2017
A brilliant and successful weekend for both our Panther and Jaguar Cub Pack teams of girls and boys who took part in the Ware and District Cubs Scouts’ 2017 Oxley Shield Competition and Wildgoose Trophy Competition:
1st place in the Wildgoose Trophy competition
4th place in the Oxley Shield competition
3rd place in the Oxley Shield
The Ware and District Cub Scouts Oxley Shield competition involves teams of 6 Cubs spending a weekend working as a team to complete a variety of bases. These bases test various Scouting, camp craft and team work skills and included tent pitching, knots, pioneering, first aid, navigation, fire lighting, knowledge of the countryside code, personal kit, an assault course, cooking and food hygiene.
Teams of Cubs from around the District took part in this year’s event. Many had taken time out from their usual Scouting activities, or holidays, to get together to practice the various skills they would be challenged with during the weekend.
Our Panther Pack Cubs had originally hoped to have a McDonald’s for their dinner, but as it was against the rules to order a ‘take away’, they decided to cook a ‘McPanthers’ instead: homemade burgers in a brioche bun topped with onions, cheese, lettuce, sautéed potatoes, peas and carrots. This was followed by ‘Surprise Surprise!’ – crushed biscuits topped with strawberry and chocolate Angel Delight, strawberries, grapes, squirty cream and chocolate buttons. By the clean plates and happy faces, they all seemed more than happy with the meal they had cooked them selves and had lots of fun preparing it together.
Our Jaguar Cubs, meanwhile, had taken took one look at the weather forecast for the weekend and decided to cook a hearty Gammon Stew for their evening meal. The stew was full of healthy veg and even pineapple, served with french bread and garlic butter. For the dessert the Cubs cooked Blackberry Slump which was enjoyed by all!
Once they had finished eating, washing and clearing up all their cooking and eating utensils, pots and pans, they all took part in a ‘Wide Game’. Then as dust fell they all gathered for a huge Camp Fire where our Panther Cubs performed a sketch called “I want to do a wee!!!!” and our Jaguar Cubs told the campfire some ‘cracking’ jokes and were entertained by lots of other skits, sketches, jokes and songs by the other 9 Cub teams taking part.
After a night under canvas each of the 8 teams of Cubs from around the District took part in the Wildgoose (handicraft) Trophy competition.
This year’s theme for a collage that they would need to make out of natural materials they could find around, them was called ‘Underwater’. Our team of six Cubs from our Panther Pack decided to create an amazing collage of a “underwater tank” which won them the competition.
Our Jaguar Cubs created a fantastic underwater volcano with lava made of leaves and water made of string. It was certainly one of the latest of the entries and almost towered over our youngest Cub Scout!
Panther Pack’s Akela said: “I am pleased to say that our girls and boys not only had a fantastic and fun-packed weekend and all their hard work paid off as they came 4th in the Oxley Shield competition, but most importantly, they came FIRST in the Wildgoose Trophy with their amazing collage!” She went on to say: “I am so proud and pleased with Panther Cub Pack Oxley Shield team – well done!!! Thank you to all leaders, young leaders and parents for their support and encouragement to the Cubs.”
Jaguar Pack’s Akela said “Since joining Jaguar pack 2 years ago I have seen our numbers increase and our cubs learn lots of new scouting skills. All the cub’s and the leader team’s efforts have payed off and we had an excellent time at this years Oxley, coming an amazing third. All the cubs put 100% effort into the weekend and were perfect representatives of our pack at this district event. But most importantly of all they had fun all weekend, with their favorite base being the fire lighting. We look forward to coming back and doing even better next year. “
Well done to all our girls and boys who took part in this year’s Oxley Shield and Wild Goose Competition and to everyone who helped to support them before and during the event. We hope you had a great time.
