Scouts help local Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
Posted on 25 October 2018
We are delighted that the girls and boys in our Scout Troop and their leaders have become regular helpers for our local Poppy Appeal each year.
As in previous years, our Scouts split into teams on one of their Friday nights to construct boxes, fill them with paper and pin Poppies (about 15,000 in total), pins, bracelets, bands and other Poppy Appeal items and then label up collection tins and boxes for the people and organisations that would then be selling poppies.
With leaders and members of the local Poppy Appeal ensuring boxes and collection tins were correctly labeled, the distribution of boxes then started.
Firstly a group of Scouts and leaders headed out into the village on the Friday night to deliver boxes and collection tins to some of the pubs and the Village Club, often to the surprise and delight of their customers and staff.
Then on the Saturday morning, many of the Scouts returned to HQ to help deliver more boxes and collection tins around the village and to businesses up and down the High Street. Finally, many families and volunteers kindly offered to deliver more boxes to businesses and volunteer collectors either further afield or to those not open at the weekend.
The official 2018 Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal launches on Thursday 25th October and we very much hope that this year’s appeal, especially, is even more than successful then previous years and we all look forward to joining as many members of our local community on Sunday 11th November for this year’s Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade at St Andrew’s Church, Stanstead Abbotts.
