Scouts win the Ware ‘Open’ Raft Race

Posted on 17 July 2017

Our team of 6 Scouts won the Ware Open Raft Race for the second year in a row on Saturday, 15th July.

Having managed to complete the build part of the race in around 4 minutes our Scouts managed to take second position on the Quay ready for the start of the paddling. The team from 2nd Ware Scouts took the lead at the start, but after a very exciting race down the River Lee to the Saracen’s Head at Bridge Foot and then back again with our Scouts paddling hard, they reached the Town Quay in 1st position.

Huge crowds had lined the banks of the river to cheer on the teams of Scouts and Guides for this year’s Raft Race, which is part of Ware Festival and organised by Ware Town Council.

There was much celebrating back on dry land as the Mayor of Ware Alexander Curtis presented them with the Scouts Raft Race Trophy.

The volunteer Scout leaders were delighted for the team who had practised both the raft build element of the race and also their paddling technique on a recent water fun day at the ESSA Water Activity Centre in Nazing.
